Quick Q&A: Chin Augmentation

How to realize your dream appearance?

Ever wonder how people look different from one another by the eyebrows, eyes, nose, mouth, and what about the chin? People actually have different chin shapes and sizes if we take some time to notice them! There are round chin, square chin, V-chin, double chin, as well as W-chin which make faces unique and never identical completely. Some people may already feel happy and satisfied with their facial appearance, but most of the people wish to have thicker eyebrows, bigger eyes with visible double eyelids, taller nose, plumper lips or even the other way around.

The question comes back to what about the chin? Do you wish for your chin to be modified to a taller/sharper in shape? If yes is the answer, Chin Augmentation (also known as chin implant) can help you find the solutions.

What is Chin Augmentation?

Chin augmentation is a surgical procedure done to make chins more prominent by increasing the projection as well as chin height. The projection of chin is believed to play an important role in balancing with forehead and nose, distributing better facial proportion especially between the chin and the nose; a small chin can cause your nose to look large while a large chin can draw all the attention from your nose. With a balanced facial proportion, it would definitely improve your confidence and self-esteem.

How does Chin Augmentation work?

There are many ways chin augmentation can be done. At our affiliated clinic, it works by the implantation method called Protese. A small incision will be made either from under your chin or inside the mouth; a “pocket” will then be created in the area between chin bone and muscles. The implant (protese) will be placed within the pocket and sutures will be used to close the incision made. The process will be done in 3 hours time and anesthetic will be given prior to the treatment.

Advantages and limitations of Chin Augmentation

Chin augmentation is a permanent result. It reshapes and resizes chin with no recovery period or hospitalization required. However, swelling can be felt for a few days, numbness can go on for a few weeks and results can take up to a month to be visible after the treatment. For the first few weeks, you will be required to sleep with face upwards as dislocation of implantation may occur as well as to reduce the swelling.

Can Chin Augmentation change the appearance of my neck?

When chin is projected, the neck will appear more angular and tighter as the skin underneath the jaw would be pushed forward to cover the new area of chin implanted.

How long does a Chin Augmentation last? If I don’t like my chin implant, can it be removed?

The result of chin implant is solid and permanent. In the case where the implant remains in place, there will be no necessity to revisit for any follow-up or changes as it will last you a lifetime.  Although the procedure is permanent, it still can be removed without any problem. However, there are also some cases where a little depression is created by the implant in the bone beneath it; this may result in less overall chin projection than you originally had before the augmentation. On the other hand, it is a rare case where patients would want to remove it, people love the results!
