What is Circulating Tumor Cell Count?
This treatment is a simple blood test that helps the doctors in assessing the prognosis (medical prediction) of patients with metastatic breast, colorectal, or prostate cancer. This test will quantify the EpCAM protein produced by epithelial tumor cells, and can aid in assessing treatment efficacy as well.
About Circulating Tumor Cells
· Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) are cells that 'escape' from a primary tumor and are carried around the body, invading the blood stream.
· These escapee cancer cells can travel to another site in the body and grow a second tumor at a later stage, called a metastasis.
How It Works
A CTC Count will find existing escapee CTCs in blood sample and count them. Doing the assessment every 3 to 6 months would be useful in monitoring the effectiveness of cancer treatment and the status of the aggressiveness of the tumors. It's important to get a clear understanding of the assessment results from the professionals.
